Back in May, the Prancing Horse introduced a new chapter in its saga when it outed its first series production PHEV. Yes, if you weren’t in the know, Ferrari now makes a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, the SF90 Stradale, which just landed in Australia with an astronomical drive-away price tag of $846,888.
The SF90 sits atop the Prancing Horse’s production car line-up, a spot that’s usually occupied by a V12 grand tourer. In this case, the mid-engine SF90 sits above the 812 Superfast. And rightly so, considering it’ll lap the Fiorano circuit faster than any other road-legal Ferrari before it.
The source of this madness is the award-winning F154 engine from the F8 Tributo, which when paired to a trio of electric motors (one for each front wheel and the other for the rear axle) endows it with capabilities unseen since the LaFerrari hypercar.
The combination of electric motors and that glorious 3.9-litre bi-turbo V8 is 735kW! With the loud pedal welded to the floor, the SF90 will accomplish the century sprint in 2.5 seconds and eventually top out at 340 km/h.
Power is channeled onto the tarmac via a new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission that promises even quicker shifts as well as a lighter assembly with added durability. Interestingly, the new gearbox lacks a typical reverse ratio as the car will instead call upon its front-mounted electric motors when backing up.
Speaking of the electric motors, the SF90’s three motors are capable of producing 162kW which in EV mode means a range of 25km using just the front axle. However, the real advantage of electric motor supplementation is obviously the mountains of torque and response they provide, essentially eliminating any lapse in immediacy brought on by turbocharger lag or power availability at a given engine RPM.
The SF90 Stradale, unlike the LaFerrari, is an electrified Prancing Horse you can actually purchase meaning you don’t have to own a collection of Ferraris to have one. All that’s needed is a cheque for $846,888 and its yours.
The Italian supercar maker is offering the SF90 with an extended seven-year maintenance program which covers all regular maintenance for the first 7 years of the car’s life.
