Ferraris fitted with Takata-made airbags need to get them replaced. The airbag, not the car.

Some hundreds of recent Ferrari models sold in Australia are now subject to a recall over potentially faulty airbags made by Japanese firm Takata.

These models, as listed by Ferrari Australiasia, are the Ferrari California, FF, 458 Italia, and 458 Spider that were made between 2009 and 2011, VIN range between 161035 and 186046. CarAdvice reports that the total of 359 cars are affected.

Vehicles that fall under the recall order can get their car’s front passenger side airbag and inflator swapped out at their nearest Ferrari dealer at no cost, with the fix taking an approximate 4 hours depending on the specific model. So far, Ferrari is not aware of any injury or incidents resulting from the potential defect.

On the nature of the component fault, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission states that: “In the event of a collision necessitating deployment of the airbag, this nonconformity may result in the failure of the inflation device and incorrect deployment of the passenger side airbag, increasing the risk of injury.”

The Takata airbag recall is the largest recall in automotive history, with the fault being even found in older and could be present in close to 80 million vehicles around the world.

With the global recall order still out on Takata-made airbags and even some manufacturers, knowingly or otherwise, installing them in new cars, it seems this issue is still some distance away from being put to rest.
