Fiat Chrysler Automobiles Australia has brought to light more details about their new roadster, the Abarth 124 Spider, before its official introduction in early October.

There’s actually quite little revealed that was not already known about the Japanese-Italian convertible. What we’re really waiting for now is a firm number on the price, but that aside the Abarth 124 Spider comes in a single specification but will be arriving Down Under with some interesting standard fitments.

Powered by a four-cylinder turbocharged 1.4-litre petrol engine that generates 125kW and 250Nm, paired with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic with paddle shifters, FCA promises that it achieves a best-in-class power-to-weight ratio of 6.2kg/hp in addition to the 50/50 weight distribution like the Mazda MX-5 upon which it’s based.

The car will come included with 17-inch Gun Metal aluminium wheels, mechanical limited slip differential, chrome quad-tip sports exhaust, Brembo brakes, and Bilstein shock absorbers. Inside, the Abarth’s cabin is slightly posher than its Japanese sibling with its leather/Alcantara sports seats and interior trim.

The 1060kg roadster can accelerate to 100km/h from rest in just 6.8 seconds, significantly quicker than the MX-5 in its 2.0-litre guise which achieves the same feat in 7.3 seconds. Buyers can upgrade to the dual-mode Monza exhaust system for even more aural drama.
