2017 Opel Insignia - Euro NCAP

In a recent batch of crash tests and safety assessments conducted by Euro NCAP, all the cars therein received a full 5-star rating, including the Opel Insignia which will be arriving on Australian shores as the next Holden Commodore.

As this German-developed Insignia - known elsewhere as the Insignia Grand Sport or Chevrolet Malibu - is mechanically identical to the upcoming Holden sedan, there’s a strong chance it will receive equally full marks from our regional vehicle safety watchdog, ANCAP, who is no stranger to using results from their colleagues in the north to inform their own verdict.

According to Euro NCAP, the Insignia performed very well in the Adult Occupant and Child Occupant categories, earning a respective 93 percent and 85 percent. Additionally, on the Pedestrian front they’ve rated it as 78 percent safe while scoring a 69 percent on the included Safety Assist features available throughout the range.

Since the rating applies to all Insignias, presumably it also covers the Touring (wagon) body style, which will make its way here as the 2018 Commodore Sportwagon, as well as the the more rugged Tourer variant. In Europe, every Insignia comes standard with lane keep assist, an active bonnet and an autonomous emergency braking system that can stop the car to avoid collisions at both city pace and higher inter-urban speeds.

The next Holden Commodore, developed by Opel (now French-owned under the PSA Group), will be making its local debut early next year.
