But it’ll have to wait.
Despite seemingly endless production issues, American EV firm Tesla is already plotting its course past the Model 3. The mass-market compact saloon may be throwing up hurdle after hurdle, but Tesla founder Elon Musk is keeping his sights set on the next set of products from the marque, namely the much-anticipated ute.
Taking to his favourite platform, Twitter, Elon Musk responded to a tweet from the Vancouver Seed Bank requesting an electric ute, saying:
“I promise that we will make a pickup truck right after Model Y. Have had the core design/engineering elements in my mind for almost 5-years. Am dying to build it.” — Elon Musk
This then sparked a flurry of activity on the Twittersphere, with people chiming in with feature requests and all sorts of things. Among the responses received was one user asking about the size of the upcoming Tesla ute, to which Musk revealed that it would be about the same size as a Ford F-150. However, it could be slightly larger, if Musk has his way.
“Similar total size [to the Ford F-150]. Maybe slightly bigger to account for a really game changing (I think) feature I’d like to add.” — Elon Musk
Not much else was revealed during Musk’s latest Twitter session, though plenty of preliminary details have been extrapolated through his various statements in the past. The Tesla ute will most certainly be large, and will most-likely be based on the Model X platform. Alongside the Model Y crossover, Tesla is also in the midst of developing the new Roadster as well as the Semi truck, both expected to hit the road in 2020.
