Dieselgate Volkswagen Emissions Scandal

Trouble-makers in the European media have been trying to drag BMW into the diesel engines exhaust emissions scandal which has brought Volkswagen to perhaps the most difficult crossroad in the company’s history.

But BMW has hit-back with a crystal clear statement which torpedoes those who sought to smear its reputation.

“Clear, binding specifications and processes are in place through all phases of development at the BMW Group to avoid wrongdoing. In other words our exhaust treatment systems are active whether rolling on the test bench or driving on the road,” the BMW statement said.

For Volkswagen however the scandal involving its cheating of exhaust emissions tests seems to grow deeper with every passing day.

Volkswagen Group Australia still hasn’t released any details of the numbers of cars affected locally – even though a media statement from head office in Wolfsburg, Germany claimed the company knows exactly which cars and models are under the microscope globally.

Over the weekend News Limited media quoted an un-named engineer at a local manufacturer who suggested the tactic developed by the Volkswagen engineers - which saw its diesel engines meet emissions standard only when the vehicle computers detected it was being tested – may have been implemented to offset some reliability concerns.

At the same time, in Germany, media reports surfaced which suggested engine management specialist Bosch warned Volkswagen about the proposed changes to the software were illegal.

And this morning News Limited reports our Federal Government is set to investigate the situation and Volkswagen Group Australia’s actions.
