Volvo has selected the Detroit Motor Show to unveil its all-new S60 Cross Country sedan and with another massive winter snow storm predicted to belt north-east North America for the opening of the Detroit Auto Show, the timing couldn’t be better for Volvo.

As the name suggests, the S60 is the sedan equivalent of the V60 Cross Country and features a 65mm raised ride height, all-wheel-drive and 18-inch or 19-inch wheels with high-profile tyres.

“We have identified a clear niche in the market for a more capable saloon with rugged styling cues and a higher stance”

Volvo says the S60 Cross Country will launch in front-wheel-drive powered by its 140kW D4 diesel engine and the all-wheel-drive version will follow propelled by the 2.4-litre, 5-cylinder diesel.

Perfect for Detroit – or Stockholm – in winter and for families who are keen on weekend adventuring.

“The S60 Cross Country is the sole contender in the crossover saloon segment” explained Volvo’s sales and marketing boss Alain Visser. “We have identified a clear niche in the market for a more capable saloon with rugged styling cues and a higher stance. The S60 Cross Country will appeal to people that are searching for an exciting and capable saloon, whilst enjoying the clear benefits that a crossover offers.”

However with that sort of market already well-served in Australia by the likes of the Volkswagen Passat Alltrack, Audi A4 Allroad and Subaru’s XV, it’s unlikely that ‘clear niche’ exists in the Australian market in any real volume so don’t be haranguing your local Volvo dealer for the S60 Cross Country.
