American IMSA sports car racing operation DeltaWing Technologies Inc, based in Braselton, Georgia, has released these images of how its ground-breaking design could morph into a four-seat road car.

Of course it’s a form-follows-function design – aerodynamic shape and lightweight construction means optimised fuel consumption.

At the heart is the narrow-track front wheelbase which allows much smaller tyres and a rear-engine layout which places the centre of gravity to the back.

DeltaWing Technologies Inc is looking for automotive companies to partner the project rather than build cars in Georgia – and it’s not as far-fetched as you think with American automotive companies faced with the looming 2025 CAFÉ (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) mandate of 54.5mpg (4.32l/100kms).

“Many of the aerodynamic, lightweight and handling benefits of the race car can translate to the street,” explained DeltaWing Technologies Inc chief Don Panoz. “We are competing at the highest levels of road racing with half the weight, half the horsepower and nearly half the fuel consumption.”

The company reckons the four-seat road car can deliver similar results without compromising safety, comfort or performance.
