The time has come for the former TG boys’ - Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May - new show to let loose its trailer for their new show under Amazon Prime, The Grand Tour.
We’ll have to wait until the full premiere to enjoy their return in earnest, but if the trailer is anything to go by, we’ll have quite a lot to look forward to. Then again, the trailer for the refreshed Top Gear (with Chris Evans and Matt LeBlanc hosting) was also full of promise but fell short of the mark in the end.
The typical and sorely missed old tropes are very evident in the short minute and a half worth of video. From the get go we have the classic deadpan banter between the hosts, showing off their on-screen chemistry. From there we’re treated to ridiculously fast and expensive cars, antics in old characterful lemons, exotic locations, gratuitous explosions, and the semi-scripted adventure on wheels that proved so engaging to watch before.
Seems to have all the boxes ticked, doesn’t it. And that final bit of comic relief was just brilliant purely on humour, but also as a nod to the old Top Gear days. Only this time, instead of James stalling a decade old Alfa Romeo GTV, Jeremy stalled a mega rare Aston Martin Vulcan.
Fans of the now-old new Top Gear (the most famous iteration) were dealt with a disappointing end to the show’s 22 season run when Jeremy Clarkson was dismissed from the BBC after throwing a punch at one of the programme’s producers.
Either way, the show will have a lot to prove to die hard fans and new viewers when it does premiere in mid November. A loyal fanbase remains, and after the relatively tepid response to the newest season of BBC’s Top Gear and following host Chris Evans’ departure, The Grand Tour is in an opportune pouncing position.
How hard can it be?
Although maybe now, due to legal reasons, they’ve been asked to ditch that phrase for “What could possibly go wrong?”
