China is the world’s largest automotive market and the Shanghai World Fair has the world’s car-makers rushing to reveal Chinese market products.

Among them, Citroen’s Metropolis large sedan stands out because it presents an opportunity for the French manufacturer to broaden its range in all international markets.

The muscular concept car was created by Citroen’s Shanghai-based International Design Team and – in keeping with Chinese market demands – it presents an imposing stature (5.3m long, 2.0m wide and 1.4m high).

Under the bonnet is a hybrid drivetrain – a 2.0-litre V6 petrol engine combined with a 70kW electric motor driving through a seven-speed dual-clutch electronic automatic transmission. The V6 delivers 200kW/375Nm and combined, the hybrid power is good for 345kW/430Nm.

Underneath is Citroen’s usual Hydractive suspension.

Styling is certainly a departure from Citroen’s norm – the Metropolis is simultaneously muscular, angled and taut but also presents ample curves.

Naturally there are some trademark nuances from the French brand – such as the concave rear window. It’s aerodynamic too with an active spoiler to provide high speed downforce.

The powerful looking body with its sharp front fenders is enhanced by the ‘Pearl Silk’ paintwork which changes colour in different light conditions.

Citroen designed the Metropolis for China but this large newcomer would be a standout new model here in Australia (and other global markets).
