When it did debut as a European exclusive back then, we stated that an Australian launch was very likely already on the books given the Citroen model’s recent launch and home market of the apparel brand.
The special edition C4 Cactus Rip Curl isn’t all that removed from the standard car, leaving the differentiation confined to choice exterior/interior trim and accents. The paint finish is contrasted with surf-culture themed decals such as on the front fenders and C-pillar. It’s roof trails and door mirror are also finished in that matching white. Inside, orange detailing can be found on areas such as the seatbelt, floor mats, and speaker surrounds.
Just 15 units - each costing $28,790 - will be coming Down Under and will be previewed at the 2016 GromSearch series in Sydney’s Marouba beach on September 24th and 25th, making the C4 Cactus Rip Curl a limited edition in a much truer sense that we’re used to seeing from mainstream manufacturers.
All of them will be powered by a PSA’s 81kW/205Nm 1.2-litre turbocharged PureTech three-cylinder petrol engine and mated a five-speed manual transmission. It also comes fitted with Goodyear all-weather tyres which should work well with the onboard GripControl system to provide extra traction when the going gets tougher for the front-driven crossover.
GripControl comes with settings either tarmac, snow, mud, or ice, each time adjusting the car’s delivery of power to each wheel independently via ECU management.
National marketing manager for Citroen Australia, Dimitri Andreatidis, said: “Both Citroen and Rip Curl are renowned for their fun and lifestyle-orientated products. The partnership is an ideal fit for the two brands. The alliance also brings together these iconic Australian and French brands in a fun way, while the added tech gives the Cactus greater abilities off the beaten track.”
Meanwhile, Rip Curl International marketing chairman, Neil Ridgway, said. “The Rip Curl Citroen Cactus is the type of car every surfer wants and it’s perfect for a trip to the beach or snow. Rip Curl is stoked to collaborate with an iconic International brand on a car that suits our lifestyle.”
