The ‘Star Spangled Banner’ wasn’t left out of the Geneva Motor Show unveilings with Chevrolet throwing the covers from the latest Corvette Stingray convertible.
Due on-sale later this year (but sadly not ‘Downunder’) the latest Corvette Stingray employs a new LT1 6.2-litre V8 engine with 335kW/610Nm on-tap.
Most importantly, underneath the all-new model is an all-new chassis 57 per-cent stiffer but 45kgs lighter than the outgoing model and achieves a 50/50 weight distribution. For driving dynamics Chevrolet is claiming ‘best-ever’ status for the latest Stingray.
The convertible model unveiled in Geneva sports a new three-ply soft top (better noise isolation) which is electronically-operated and can be opened or closed at up to 50 km/h. The bonnet is made from carbon fibre and fenders, doors and rear quarter panels use a composite material.
Inside are hand-wrapped leather seats on lightweight magnesium frames, aluminium and real carbon fibre.
A track version called the Z51 Performance Pack brings a dry-sump system, electronic limited slip differential, an aero package and extra cooling for the brakes, differential and transmission.
