Toyota has just sold hybrid-powered vehicle number 50,000 in Australia – and with 20,000 hybrid Camrys now sold, the locally-built hybrid mid-size sedan has moved ahead of the imported Prius in the Japanese giant’s sales ladder (18,000 sold since launch in 2001).
In total, Lexus has sold 8,500 hybrid vehicles in Australia and Toyota has sold over 42,000.
“We achieved record Toyota and Lexus hybrid sales last year of more than 13,000 cars in Australia – an increase of 64.8 per-cent over the previous year,” revealed Toyota Australia’s sales and marketing chief Matthew Callachor.
The local success mirrors Toyota’s global achievements – in 2012 Toyota and Lexus sold more than one-million hybrid vehicles in a calendar year for the first time and the cumulative total is now close to five-million.
