A new entry-level 520d BMW 5 Series GT priced at $89,900 is the star billing of an update for the German giant’s clever hatchback version of the superb 5 Series sedan.
Officially called the ‘BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo’ the updated lineup sees BMW’s Efficient Dynamics technology (including Auto Start/Stop and electronic power steering) adopted across the range for impressive cuts in fuel consumption and emissions. The range-topping BMW 535i GT sees fuel consumption reduced to 8.2l/100kms and exhaust C02 emissions down to 192g/km.
The mid-range BMW 5 Series GT 530d goes further. Extra urge under the bonnet lifts output to 190kW/560Nm (from 180kW/520Nm), but fuel consumption and emissions are down to 5.8l/100kms and 153g/km.
For the new $89,900 520d model, the turbocharged 2.0-litre common rail diesel delivers 135kW/380Nm for zero to 100km/h in 8.9 seconds. Fuel consumption for the new 5 Series GT family member is rated at 5.3l/100kms and exhaust C02 at 139g/km.
Other changes include standard fitment of BMW’s Driving Experience Control with Eco Pro. The centre console switch offers three modes (Eco Pro, Comfort and Sport) with the Eco Pro mode good for a 20 per cent cut in fuel consumption.
As well, the new Series GT scores BMW’s Active Protection Safety Package. This is a camera/radar system which detects a potential impact (and also detects oversteer or undertseer) and prepares the vehicle by closing windows and sunroof and tightening seat belts. The system can also automatically apply maximum braking and after a collision holds that maximum barking for 1.5 seconds to minimize the risk of a secondary collision.
BMW’s Parking Assistant self-parking system and a Bang & Olusfen audio system join the options list as well as a new M Sport package which includes sports seats, sports suspension, 20-inch M double spoke alloy wheels, M Sport steering wheel and BMW Individual roof liner plus High Gloss shadow line trim.
“The 5 Series range is iconic and was the class leader in sales last year,” revealed BMW Australia chief Phil Horton. “Now with the new entry level model, revised pricing and improved specification of the Gran Turismo we are set to build on that success.”
The updated BMW 5 Series GT range is:
520d GT $89,900
530d GT $103,500
535i GT $109,500
