BMW will be showing off some new metal at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show, but rather than (or apart from) a previously unseen concept car or wacky VISION something, the Munich outfit is apparently going all in with their new 8 series vehicles.

We’ve already some fairly accurate guesses about how the production 8 Series coupe might look given that it was already previewed to some extent with 2017’s Concept 8 Series, which will go on to supersede the 6 Series coupe while simultaneously taking BMW a little more upmarket. Even a convertible version can be easily extrapolated from that basic template.

However, to complete the set, BMW is apparently due to unveil what they submit to be the successor to the 6 Series GC in the form of the 8 Series Gran Coupe, a sleek four-door coupe that should share the same mechanical package as the 2-door. Naturally, this should spawn a very fast M8 Gran Coupe as well.

Don’t expect an internet preview just prior to the actual Geneva unveil, though, as BMWBlog says that the company is looking at the event as a “grand stage” to present their newest design exercise. That said, perhapsthose hoping for a near production version of either the 8 Series coupe or Grand Coupe will have to retain their patience.

However, some key facts about its final car should remain in keeping with the pattern seen with the outgoing 6 Series. Just as the M6 mirrored the powertrain package of the existing M6, so too will the M8 in either Coupe, Gran Coupe, or Convertible guises.

This means a 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged petrol V8 will sit up front, sending power to (ostensibly) all wheels via the M xDrive system with an 8-speed ZF automatic slotted in the middle. Power, just like the F90, will stand at around 447kW and 750Nm. The 0-100km/h time should also be comparable to the M5, at 3.4 seconds.
