The natural progression for a regular BMW M car in 2018 seems to be one that keeps on evolving, the M3 and M4 have are now offered with a Competition Pack that adds go-faster kit and mechanical tweaks, and from then on we have the higher tier CS variants, and even a hardcore M4 GTS built for track use.

It’s playing out in a mostly identical fashion with the M2 and now, it’s the F90 M5’s turn. A source has leaked to a member of Bimmerpost with specification details and even some images of what we can expect to be revealed next week at the M5 Competition’s official unveil.

Starting with the exterior, which has not undergone any major changes as expected. However, we can see some new gloss black accents on the kidney grilles, a slightly lower suspension, upgraded exhaust system, and a set of new Y-Spoke M light alloy wheels (789M).

Under the bonnet, the M5’s 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 now develops a healthy 460kW, a boost of 19kW from the standard car’s S63 in standard 441kW tune. Torque is presumed to have stayed level at 750Nm, but it is more than possible that BMW M would also have increased this closer to 800Nm.

As before, thrust and twist are distributed via a new M xDrive all-wheel drive system but prior to that is funnelled through an 8-speed ZF automatic transmission. With that, the 0-100km/h dash duration has been shaven by 0.1s to 3.3 seconds. Meanwhile, 10.8 seconds is what it’ll supposedly need to sail past 200km/h before topping out at 305km/h provided the limiter be deactivated by selecting the M Driver’s Package as an extra.

The aforementioned Sports Exhaust system has also been tuned specifically for the Competition Package, aiming to project a more aggressive note and aural character overall while hopefully having some positive effect on actual engine response.

So far, details are scarce about the list of changes to the M5 Competition’s cabin, but there shouldn’t be any drastic alterations. All we know so far from this leak is that there will be unique ‘Competition’ illuminated door sills, but expect an extra dose of carbon fibre inserts, and interior badging.
