BMW has revealed the third member of its I model sub-brand – the i8 Concept Spyder.
The open-top, two-seat sports car concept is a plug-in petrol-electric hybrid (three-cylinder petrol engine) boasting 260kW/550Nm and dynamic looks one associates with BMW sports cars. BMW says a roof is still under development.
Like its sibling, the i8 Concept, the Spyder boasts new thinking in lightweight design with a carbon fibre passenger cell plus BMW’s new eDrive drivetrain technology.
Aerodynamics are massive with AirCurtains, flaps and even a spoiler lip on the windscreen frame. At the front, the laser light headlights follow the U-shaped design of BMW i.
Doors pivot around the A-pillars, there are side skirts, a rear diffuser plus three-dimensional rear air outlets and U-shaped rear lights.
BMW claims the i8Concept Spyder can accelerate from zero to 100km/h in five seconds and fuel consumption is around 3.0l/100kms. Pure electric range is around 30kms.
