They must have a lot of law enforcement vehicles in North America because Germany’s BMW has signed a contract to supply more than 240,000 diesel engines to power them.
The engines will be fitted to specialist vehicles manufactured by American company Carbon Motors Corp.
BMW will supply inline six-cylinder diesel engines complete with cooling and exhaust gas systems and an automatic transmission.
With BMW’s diesel expertise, the American agencies using the vehicles will reduce fuel consumption and C02 emissions by 40 per cent in coming years.
“The BMW Group drive system makes it possible to accommodate the mission critical law enforcement needs for performance, efficiency and driving dynamics,” explained Carbon Motors Corp CEO William Santana Li. “Efficient BMW diesel engines will benefit not only the environment, but – thanks to the fleet’s lower running costs – also the American taxpayer.”
Engine development is a hallmark of BMW’s history. Last year 498,000 BMW vehicles - 39 per cent of its 2009 sales - were diesel-powered.
