The views from California’s Pebble Beach are amongst the world’s most spectacular but during the annual Concours d’Elegance over the weekend, BMW’s unveiling of the all-new M4 Coupe caused crowds to instantly divert their eyes from the beach vista.

Although called a ‘Concept’, we’re thinking the M4 Coupe will be announced for production in a few weeks at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Sure, finished in a unique ‘Aurum Dust’ paint and with plenty of lightweight carbon fibre bits here and there, the Pebble Beach concept won’t exactly mirror the production version but we’ve got a pretty clear idea…and we love what we see.

But a ‘concept’ wouldn’t be a ‘concept’ without some mystery and in the case of the BMW M4 Coupe that mystery would be the powerplant. We note the M4 Coupe runs the hallmark ‘M’ power-bulge bonnet and there are some championship the 309kW/400Nm V8 engine powering the current M3 while others are suggesting the twin-turbocharged six-cylinder (250kW/450Nm) as fitted to the Z4. Gone BMW – let’s throw-in the 412kW/680Nm twin-turbo V8 from the M5 and then we’re talking real competition for the AMG ‘Black’.

What we do know is the BMW M4 Coupe as shown in Pebble Beach features a roof, rear diffuser and front splitter in carbon fibre, black-coloured ‘M ‘double-bar’ kidney grille and LED versions of the usual ‘M’ twin round headlights.  There’s also BMW’s latest ‘Air Curtain’ and ‘Air Breather’ inlets and outlet vents (the latter ‘gills’ behind the front wheels).

Proportions are typical BMW – long bonnet, classic flowing roofline and large wheel-arches to accommodate the massive 20-inch ‘M’ lightweight ally wheels.

We’ll be checking with the postman daily for our invite to the BMW M4 Coupe media launch…’concept car’ indeed, this baby is hot and ready to rumble!
