While looking very similar to its predecessor, the new 6 Series Convertible is actually longer, wider and lower.

But it’s all-change under the bonnet with the new lineup comprising the entry-level turbo-six cylinder 640i and the V8-powered 650i.

The six-cylinder is BMW’s 3.0-litre TwinPower Turbo providing 235kW at 5,800rpm and peak torque of 450Nm from 1,300rpm. Zero to 100km/h takes 5.7 seconds and BMW says the 640i returns combined cycle fuel consumption of 7.9l/100kms (helped by auto start/stop).

For the 650i, BMW has swapped to a 4.4-litre V8 with 300kW at 5,500rpm and peak torque of 600Nm from 1,750rpm. Zero to 100km/h ticks by in 5.0 seconds and the 650is is good for fuel consumption of 10.7l/100kms.

Both drive the rear wheels via BMW’s superb eight-speed automatic transmission.

BMW’s Drive Dynamic Control with driver-select adjustable suspension is standard and enthusiast drivers can opt for the electronically controlled dampers and other goodies in BMW’s Adaptive Drive system.

Also on the options list are Surround View, BMW Night Vision, BMW Parking Assistant and a Head-Up display.

Changes to the chassis have delivered 50 per cent more torsional rigidity fr enhanced ride and handling.

Inside, BMW 6 Series Convertible drivers can choose from three types of new lightweight seats or optional sports seats.

As well, the new 6 Series Convertible gains BMW’s Control display with a standard seven-inch screen or a massive 10.2-inch version if you opt for the Professional Navigation system. Those new screens have driven a new instrument panel which rises steeply in front of the driver and front passenger (BMW says the design inspiration came from high-speed powerboats).

There are the expected luxury trim items in the new interior (including Dakota or Nappa leather) and the soft-top roof has been improved acoustically and is also more rigid than the outgoing model. It’s available in three colours.
including a new Anthracite Silver.

BMW has one up on most rivals with the 6 Series Convertible’s boot capacity. Even with the roof open, the 300-litre trunk can handle two full-size golf bags plus an overnight bag. And with the roof closed, capacity grows to a massive 350-litres.

BMW delivered 41 6 Series coupes to Australian customers last year…those considering the new model have a magnificent 2+2 coupe awaiting them.
