Congrats are in order for BMW, then, as the Munich-based carmaker has been named the world’s most admired automotive company, as compiled in Fortune’s annual brand ranking.

Of this year's Top 50 contenders, which naturally will include the likes of Apple (1st), Nike (12th), Coca Cola (16th), Alphabet (6th), and Facebook (9th, tied with Microsoft), only two automotive brands were included: BMW and Toyota. For 2017, the Japanese entrant placed 34th on the list while BMW took the 21st spot.

It’s a drop - or is it a jump -  from last year’s Fortune list, on which Bimmer was ranked three places higher at 18th. Toyota took a similar placement change too as it was 28th in 2016.

More interestingly, however, of the 50 brands listed in the Fortune compilation, none of them besides BMW and Toyota are automakers. The fact that Ford, Honda, GM, Ferrari, Audi, Volkswagen, or Mercedes-Benz aren’t even in contention is reason for pause.

Whether or not BMW earning the title of most admired brand as far as this industry is concerned is universally accepted is up for strenuous debate. Surely, there are those who will disagree. Aside from 2016 and now 2017, it was Toyota that pipped the competition.
