This… interesting looking thing is what BMW reckons will knock Tesla down a few pegs in the electric vehicle arena. Called the ‘i Vision Dynamics Concept,’ this four-door gran-coupe will come to market sooner rather than later, and will be more than a fleeting headache to the Americans.

Built to sit between the i3 and the i8, the i Vision Dynamics represents a step ahead for BMW’s ‘i’ electric sub-brand, getting it closer to achieving its target of having 25 electrified cars by 2025, with 12 of them being totally electric. It’s worth noting that while this is a precursor to a production car, there’s no telling whether it’ll end up going head-to-head with Tesla’s Model 3 or Model S, though the former is most likely.

Leading up to the Frankfurt motorshow where the i Vision Dynamics made its debut, there were rumours running around that the company would be bringing a fully-electric 3-Series to do battle with Tesla’s new Model 3. And with its sleek roofline and flush doorhandles, it’s pretty plain to see that the bosses in Munich are making their intentions known to the newcomers in California.

No timeline has been given as to when we can expect to see the i Vision Dynamics go into production, though Dr. Ian Robertson, a BMW board member, spoke to the media and said that if there’s only one certainty with the company’s concept cars, it’s that “production cars are going to look very similar to them, and they’re not that far away,” immediately conjuring throwbacks to the concept cars that preceded the BMW i3 and i8.

There wasn’t much talk about the powertrain beneath the new concept car, though a 0-100km/h sprint time of under 4-seconds, packs 600km of range on a single charge, and will do just under 200km/h flat-out. Though BMW’s got a history of only fettling the design of their concept cars ever so slightly before putting them into production, we certainly hope they’ll have another go over the front-end, because that is… challenging. Very challenging.
