BMW has taken the wraps from the ActiveHybrid 5 sedan, claimed to be the most powerful and efficient full hybrid in its segment.
The BMW ActiveHybrid 5 employs a TwinPower Turbo six-cylinder engine, an electric drive system and eight-speed automatic transmission. Combined output is 250kW/610Nm, zero to 100km/h takes 5.9 seconds, fuel consumption is rated as low as 6.4l/100kms and axjst C02 at only 149g/km.
Under the bonnet is the same six-cylinder petrol engine fitted to the BMW 535i, but the 40kW electric motor 9powered by a lithium-ion battery) allows the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 to be driven purely on electric power up to 60km/h for up to four kilometres.
Hybrid start/stop cuts the petrol engine when stationary and further, in ECO PRO mode, the petrol engine is switched off and decouple for coasting ate speeds up to 160km/h.
In standard form, the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 is only identified by C-pillar and grille badges but on the options list are 18-inch super-aerodynamic ‘Streamline’ light-alloy wheels.
BMW stores the 96-cell lithium ion battery between the wheel arches in the boot, reducing luggage capacity by 145-litres to 375-litres
