That sub-$40K sticker represents a five per cent cut from the starting price of the curent BMW 1-Series.

Kicking-off the new BMW 1-Series range will be the 116i - its new turbocharged 1.6-litre engine delivers the same power as the outgoing 118i (100kW) but returns 24-per cent less fuel consumption (5.7l/100kms for the new BMW 116i). Next-up is the 125kW BMW 118i while the turbo-diesel is the 105kW BMW118d.

The petrol engines are part of BMW’s new TwinPower Turbo family with auto start/stop aiding fuel consumption and an optional eight-speed automatic transmission should ensure plenty of headlines for German giant’s new compact.

BMW says the all-new 1-Series is slightly larger than its predecessor (85mm longer, 30mm longer wheelbase, luggage space up to 360-litres) and a new BMW Lines system – Urban Line and Sport Line – simplifies the process of adding extra specification and personalization.

Included in the options list are Parking Assisnat, Lane Departure Warning and Rearview Camera – very handy options for a compact car.

Look for the all-new BMW 1-Series in local dealerships from October.
