Already a standout in its segment thanks to a six-cylinder engine and rear-wheel-drive (RWD), BMW has upped the ante in the ‘Pocket Rocket’ stakes by introducing the brilliant BMW 1 Series M Coupe.
Powered by an M-tuned twin-turbocharged, 3.0-litre, six-cylinder engine, and bristling with M Sport technology and features, the 1 Series M Coupe could start a sales rush when it hits local BMW dealerships next year.
With 250kW/450Nm, the compact BMW 1 Series Coupe has a power-to-weight ratio of 4.4kgs per horsepower (kerb weight 1,495kgs), making it comparable to the third generation BMW M3.
Externally there is some substantial aerodynamic work including the first volume production use of air curtains at the front - in-flowing air is routed via two ducts to an opening in the outer section of the front apron then to the front wheel wells to provide a high-speed curtain which prevents buffeting from the spinning wheels – and that’s thinking straight from Formula One.
There’s also large bulging wheel arches to accommodate the extra tyre width, M-Design exterior mirrors and a bootlid spoiler.
Underneath, final specifications and tune for the all-alloy suspension were developed after extensive testing at the Nurburgring race rack. The variable M differential lock is standard as are Dynamic Stability Control and Cornering Brake Control.
On the inside there is the usual M goodies in an interior finished in sporty black/grey with contrasting orange stitching. And of course, there’s Park Distance Control and the full range of BMW ConnectedDrive (including satellite navigation with an 8.8-inch screen). All of this in a compact!
BMW Australia has yet to announce local specifications, pricing or on-sale date, but already the 1 Series M Coupe looks like being one of the best drives of 2011.
