BMW has broken with tradition – range-topping versions of its new 6 Series Coupe can be optioned with all-wheel-drive.

The V8-powered BMW 650i xDrive Coupe delivers variable power distribution via BMW’s latest electronically controlled 4WD system and enables the big luxo coupe to sprint from zero to 100km/h in 4.8 seconds – that’s faster than a BMW M3.

All-paw grip is just one of the significant changes included as BMW launches the third generation of its superb 6 Series Coupe.

Under the bonnet, the new BMW 6 Series provides a choice between three TwinPower trbo engines – two petrol and one diesel. All drive through BMW’s glorious eight-speed Sport automatic transmission.

The new six-cylinder diesel-powered BMW640d provides 230kW/630Nm, the six-cylinder petrol BMW640i is good for 235kW/450Nm while the range-topping 4.4-litre V8 petrol BMW650i delivers 300kW/600Nm. BMW claims the new turbo-diesel is the world’s sportiest six-cylinder diesel engine.

Improved fuel consumption was a development focus for BMW’s engineers and both the 640i and 640d run Auto-Start stop – one of a raft of changes. In that context, the 650i is rated at 10.5l/100kms, the 640i at 7.6l/100kms and the 640d at 5.4l/100kms.

New styling is evolutionary – BMW’s designers dared not alter the classic long bonnet and set-back passenger compartment which have been the hallmarks of the 6 Series since it first appeared. Size is up – the newcomer is 5mm lower, but 74mm longer than its predecessor, 39mm wider and the wheelbase is 75mm longer.

New headlights are bi-xenon but Adaptive LEDs are optional.

The side view is most changed with a more steeply curved roof and bolder characater lines while the rear features new lights and a V-shape in the centre which matches a similar addition at the front.

With the usual wheel arch bulges, the new BMW 6 Series maintains the muscular on-road stance of its predecessors.

Inside is more luxury, more technology and more space for rear seat passengers. Boot space is massive at 460-litre – enough for three full-size golf bags BMW says.

There’s a new flat screen for the iDrive system or a massive 10.2-inch screen (the largest in the segment) if you opt for BMW’s ‘Professional’ navigation system. Also on the options list are BMW’s latest full-colour Head-Up Display and a Bang & Olufsen audio system.

Three types of seats are offered with optional Nappa leather.

And, BMW being BMW, the chassis affords multiple options including Adaptive Drive and Dynamic Damper Control and there is a sporty M Sport pack there as well.

BMW Australia will announce local; prices and specifications in due course.
