Just launched in Europe, BMW Australia has confirmed a late 2010 downunder arrival for the gloriously styled 5 Series Touring (wagon).
Popular with Australian buyers, the new 5 Series Touring is the fourth generation and the all-new lineup includes two straight-six petrol engines and two diesels – a four cylinder and a six cylinder. The range-topper is the twin-turbo 535 with 225kW, while the other petrol engined model – the naturally aspirated 523i returns 150kW The four-cylinder diesel is the 520d with 135kW and the six-cylinder 530d is good for 180kW.
As expected, BMW’s EfficientDynamics is evident across the range with features like electro-mechanical power steering, brake energy regeneration, Auto Start Stop (520d) and active airflap control. The 530d complies with the new EU6 emissions standards while all other models are EU5 compliant.
BMW’s eight-speed automatic transmission is optionally available and the rear suspension is pneumatic with automatic self-leveling.
Styling is superb with the usual BMW long bonnet, long wheelbase and short overhangs embodied in a wagon design that features a muscular rear end. Extensive use of aluminium (doors, bonnet, front side panels and some drivetrain/suspension components) keeps the weight down.
Inside there is the full compliment of BMW luxury features and BMW ConnectedDrive with Parking Assistant, Surround View, Active Cruise Control, Lane Change Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Speed Limit info, High-Beam Assistant, BMW Night Visio and head-up Display. Dynamic Driving Control (individual suspension tuning) is an option. With the 40:20:40 split rear seat folded, luggage space is 1.670 litres (560 litres with the seat in place).
Local pricing and specifications will be confirmed ahead of the late 2010 launch.
