In the circle of motoring enthusiasts, few cars due out within the next few months are as hotly anticipated as the next generation Toyota Supra. The everyman hero sports car has been sorely missed since it exited production in 2002.
Lately, word has spread that BMW is working closely together with the Japanese automotive giant on a joint sports car project that will birth both the Supra and the next Z5 roadster, with the Munich partners supplying the dynamic know-how and Toyota ponying up the hybrid technology that will make both cars uniquely forward thinking.
The only thing we are still hazy about is how the cars will end up looking. Toyota previously showed off the FT-1 concept back in 2014, and while the front-engine, rear-drive layout prevails there, that car is clearly too far flung to actually be sold as a viable production car without commanding a fantastical price.
The images (or ‘renderings’, rather) you see here were created by SupraMKV.com, based on the most recent spy shots of the Supra prototype seen undergoing testing while wearing ‘production-intent design and parts’.
Some of the FT-1’s design cues make an appearance here too, including the large front air intakes, tapered profile, bubble roof, and dramatic rear end. Only time will tell whether the car Toyota will eventually announce will bear resemblance to this educated guess but, judging by the car seen in the wild under layers of camouflage, it could very well look fairly similar.
