Audi will most definitely not miss an opportunity to showcase one of their new concept cars, particularly at a motor show as prominent and as geographically significant as the one happening in Shanghai this week.
Enter the e-tron Sportback, set to be a sporty crossover with the sloping coupe-esque roofline as denoted by the moniker also used in cars like the A7 and A5. The year is still young, but Audi has been rolling out nothing but electrified models at the previous major motor shows around the world, such as the production-bound Q8 (and its various permutations) and an SUV just called e-tron, to name a couple.
These just-released sketches show a concept with a difference, however, as it showcases a new fascia that’s expands upon the wide grille and thin headlamps that have some to associate the Ingolstadt brand. Here we have the usual front elements set within a black frame.
Being electric, there’s no need for a typical front grille to funnel air into the radiator, so here the e-tron Sport’s front end is left as a solid piece, though textured, with a glowing version of Audi’s four-rings logo perched prominently.
The SUV looks wide appropriately aggressive down the sides and around the rear too, with thick haunches surrounding the back wheels. A light strip that spans the width of the car creates an uninterrupted source of illumination when braking.
For now, these sketches are all we have to sate our curiosity as to what Audi has in store for the Shanghai reveal. Expect a four-wheel driven five-seater sports SUV that’s battery powered and has a tricked-out interior that’s a technological marvel while being tastefully understated.
