At the upcoming Los Angeles Motor Show, the closest any major annual automotive exhibition is to the Bay Area and Silicon Valley, Audi is planning to unveil a concept car that should soon materialise into the German marque’s flagship fully electric model.
For now, in its gestation phase, the car is called the e-tron GT, a much sleeker and sportier sequel to the e-tron SUV from earlier this year and a direct would-be competitor to the Tesla Model S. From the teaser material shown so far, there’s plenty of reason to infer that it will feature a coupe-like lift back roofline much like an A7.
Furthermore, the underpinnings of the e-tron GT are shared with the Taycan, an equally fully electric product from sister brand Porsche. Supposedly, Audi has set firm sights on bringing the car to market in 2020, coinciding closely with Zuffenhausen’s rollout.
Upon its release, the e-tron GT (or whatever they choose to name the finished version) will feature dual electric motors for supercar-like performance, juiced by an integral battery with around 100kW and an advanced fast-charge system. Driven correctly, the EV should be capable of over 400km on a single charge.
All eyes will surely be on Audi as they unveil the e-tron GT, with particular attention paid to reading how far this concept is from becoming a showroom reality. The next few years at the Volkswagen Group should be very interesting indeed as all major brands under the umbrella are gearing up for a major push toward range-wide electrification as the German juggernaut vies for dominance as the world’s foremost purveyor of zero emissions vehicles.
