Audi’s new A8 and S8 models are set for reveal at the Frankfurt Motor Show in a couple of weeks and will be on-sale in Australia early next year.

Ringing-in the improvements is the range-topping A8 L which scores the Volkswagen Group’s 6.3-litre W12 engine (368kW) with fuel-saving ‘Cylinder On Demand’ technology which allows cruising on only six cylinders to deliver combined cycle fuel consumption of 11.7l/100kms.

There’s extra urge under the bonnet for the mainstream Audi A8 models too with the twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 now up to 320kW and – aided by the Quattro all-wheel-drive system – good for zero to 100km/h in 4.5 seconds.

Audi A8’s entry model petrol is the 3.0-litre TFSI with 228kW.

On the diesel front, European customers can choose from a 3.0-litre offering 190kW or the 4.2-litre version which is now up to 283kW/850Nm

Hybrid power is available in the form of the A8 Hybrid which combines its 2.0-litre TFSI engine with electric power to deliver 180kW/480Nm.

The glorious S8 is only available with the 4.0-litre TFSI V8 with power now rated at 380kW.

On the styling front, the new A8 looks superb and while dimensions for the regular models are unchanged, the luxo A8 L is 13cms longer in the wheelbase. Lights are new and include the GPS-based ‘active’ lighting system which monitors the road ahead to predict lighting requirements.

Inside the technology ramps-up with inclusions such as a Head-Up display, 360-degree parking assistance, adaptive cruise control and active lane-keeping assist. There’s also a new touch-pad operation for navigation and multimedia and new front seats with both massage and ventilation functions.

And, as you would expect from the latest version of Audi’s flagship, there are new choices in interior leather and timber veneer trim highlights.
