Today, German manufacturer Audi announced that the company’s performance arm, previously known as Quattro GmbH, will know be renamed as Audi Sport GmbH. Quattro has managed to hold on to its name since its inception in 1983, but has lately created some confusion when it comes to Audi’s all-wheel drive models.

The new Audi Sport moniker will best describe the roll of the company, which fettles with existing Audi cars to generate RS models. It also handles the R8 supercar, customer race cars, customised road cars, and lifestyle products under the Audi Sport brand. Whilst we rejoice in the clearer distinction of the division and its work, we are far more keen to discuss its announcement of no less than eight new cars in the next 18 months.

Audi Sport’s announcement didn’t provide any more details on the incoming cars, but it’s safe to assume that Audi’s new A4 and A5 will spawn RS models. And then there’s the A6 and A7, which are due for a full-model replacement soon, and that’ll result in hotter-than-hot RS variants, too. All body styles included, that brings the total up to 7 (assuming the RS6 will be Avant only, like the current RS6).

So… the last one? That’s anyone’s guess at this point. A lot of the industry is running around the idea of an uprated R8, or maybe a new customer race car, much like the R8 LMS race car that is available for sale. Regardless, we appreciate the new Audi Sport name, and we’re looking forward to less confusion between Audi’s performance division and its proprietary all-wheel drive system.
