Audi’s new model onslaught continues with the launch of the all-new seventh-generation A6 mid-size sedan.
Audi Australia has introduced the high-tech newcomer with two petrol and one diesel engine, driving through the seven-speed S tronic automatic transmission and latest generation Quattro all-wheel-drive. All feature standard, sporty S line specifications.
Entry-level 2.0TDI and 2.0TFSI variants (probably two-wheel-drive) will follow late this year.
As part of its fuel-efficiency drive, Audi has focused on reducing the weight of the all-new A6. More than 20 per cent of the body is made of aluminium and the new model tips the scales 30kgs – 80kgs lighter than its predecessor – Audi says the A6 is 15 per cent lighter than if it were made purely of conventional steel.
Styling is an evolution of the previous shape but it’s certainly elegant and sporty as only Audi knows how. The new Audi A6 is 4.92 metres long, 1.87 metres wide and only 1.46 metres high – the low, sweeping lines bringing a powerful on-road presence which in the metal is actually much improved over its predecessor.
A head-up display, Audi Lane Assist and night vision head the list of electronic driver aids included in the expected high-tech avalanche in Audi’s new ‘Executive Class’ mid-sizer. The Audi Drive Select dynamic handling system is also standard and now features a new program called ‘Efficiency’.
As well, Audi says its adaptive air suspension with controlled damping will be available as an option.
Perhaps more so than the exterior, inside the new Audi A6 takes a fresh new approach with a ‘wraparound’ feel for the cockpit, layered wood veneer trim and of course the latest audio and navigation equipment. Ventilated/massaging seats and a Bang & Olufsen audio system are on the options list.
Some changes under the bonnet (remembering the 2.0TDI and 2.0TFSI won’t be available until Spring). Two petrol engines are currently offered – 2.8FSI with 150kW/280Nm and 3.0TFSI with 220kW/440Nm – the latter delivering zero to 100km/h in just 5.5 seconds.
Diesel power comes from the 3.0TDI with 180kW/500Nm.
