Audi Doubling RS Range By 2018

Stephan Winkelmann, head of Audi’s performance-offshoot quattro GmbH, says that there are plans to expand on the current range of RS models, with 8 additions to the family by early 2018. “There is more to come,” he said. “We have one company, one name, and we have a brand. But we will remain exclusive.”

At present, the 7 existing RS models encompass the A3, Q3, TT, A6, and A7. These models will have more stablemates soon, though it remains unclear which Audi models will make the cut. Rumours are strife of a hotter R8, but there’s no real telling where the RS badges will go.

The parallels between RS and Mercedes-Benz’s equivalent, AMG, are clear. But Winkelmann says that the products will not follow the same direction (despite AMG’s sales hitting new successes almost every year). “We are not going to do what they do,” he assured. “We have a lot of plans, but we are not revealing them yet. It is better to under-promise and over-deliver.” With AMG shipping 80,000 annually, we are left wondering where Audi intends to go with this, with the current numbers hovering a little below 20,000 annually.
