The indications are updated Audi A8 luxury limousine will be a cracker…starting with the indicators.

Ahead of its debut at next month’s Frankfurt Motor Show, Audi has released these images of the turning lights of the refreshed A8 which illuminate in sequence like and airport runway light.

At the front, each headlight contains 18 light-emitting diodes in a strip subdivided into seven blocks. At the rear, each tail-light contains 24 LEDs in eight segments.

When you flick the indicator stalk, the lights are sequentially activated at 20 millisecond intervals from the inside outwards (in the direction you’re turning). After 150 milliseconds, all segments are bright and then for another 250 milliseconds the illuminate with full intensity. The turn signals then go dark before repeating the display sequence.

For the headlights themselves, the latest Audi A8 runs auto high-beam (naturally!) but with a cutting edge difference (naturally again – this is Audi!). Each Audi Matrix LED headlight has 25 light-emitting diodes and when the on-board camera detects vehicles ahead, relevant sections of the lights are masked or dimmed by shutting-off individual diodes which preserves a bright light in the remaining zones.

There’s also navigation-based cornering lights and a marker light for pedestrians.
