For EV propulsion, please look to Lagonda.

2015 Aston Martin DBX Concept – Geneva Motor Show

Aston Martin, the venerated British performance brand that seeks to push into the ultra-luxury SUV space, will not be doing so with a selection of powertrains including the presently-fashionable electric and plug-in hybrid varieties. Instead, it’ll stick with what it’s good at and shove a big, sonorous petrol mill up front and ensure scintillating noises out the rear, and leave that electric nonsense for its ‘repositioned’ sub-brand Lagonda.

Aston boss Andy Palmer said that since the ‘preview’ of the marque’s SUV back in 2015 (in the form of the DBX), the targets have changed for the project. Not only will it ditch the all-electric powertrain that the DBX showed off, but it’ll also adopt two extra doors (oh yeah, DBX was an SUV-coupe in the truest form).

Speaking to Automotive News Europe, Palmer also shot down the possibilities of a diesel variant of the ‘Varekai’ SUV, and also any hopes of a plug-in hybrid. It seems pretty clear that the Varekai will only get either an Aston V12 (twin-turbo these days) or a turbo-V8 from technical partners AMG, with electrified variants/options relegated for Lagonda to capitalise on.

Aston Martin’s dormant marque Lagonda was relaunched in a big way at this years’ Geneva Motor Show, where they unveiled the Vision Concept that is pipped to enter production in 2021. Notably, the Vision Concept was shown off at Geneva alongside 40% scale models of a coupe and SUV, initially said to preview how Lagonda’s design language can be applied to differing bodystyles.

Though now we know that the Aston Martin ‘Varekai’ SUV won’t have any kind of electrification…
