The DB11 was the first model to introduce forced-induction to modern-day Aston Martins by way of a 5.2-litre bi-turbo V12 that produces 447kW. Coming soon is an all-new version of their harder, lighter Vantage, which will receive a V8 from Mercedes-AMG.
However, at the upcoming Shanghai Motor Show, CarNewsChina reports that Aston Martin will finally debut its DB11 with that same AMG-sourced V8 to entice predominantly Chinese buyers as the exact engine size of just below 4,000cc undercuts the highest vehicle tax bracket, making it a more affordable proposition for buyers there.
China is also, unsurprisingly, a source of many new customers for the British sports car maker, and introducing less expensive DB11 there would result in even more eager would-be owners keen to spend their precious Yuan.
The German motor is very much related to the M178 engine that powered the AMG GT, albeit duly fettled by Aston Martin before being slotted into their cars. In the soon-to-be-unveiled DB11, it’s suspected to produce roughly 395kW, slightly more than Mercedes-AMG GT S to motivate the heavier DB11.
Following a possible initial availability in China, Aston Martin may roll out the entry-level V8-powered DB11 to other markets around the world. The question is, though, if the less expensive DB11 will create an uneasy rivalry with the upcoming Vantage, a car that will use the same same engine and likely have the same power output.
