For some, this is the ‘no-doubt-about-it’ star of the Detroit Auto Show – the new generation Subaru WRX STI.
The North American specification model shown runs a turbocharged 2.5-litre boxer engine, multi-mode ‘Driver’s Control Centre Differential’ (DCCD) and tuned suspension as part of its impressive arsenal.
Subaru Australia is playing its cards close to its chest on exact details and pricing for local buyers but we do know the all-new WRX STI features the stiffest body and suspension calibrations so far plus stiffer and more direct steering, Active Torque Vectoring and multi-mode Vehicle Dynamics Control. Despite that extra stiffness, the bodyshell is actually lighter than the current generation WRX STI.
Under the bonnet, the North American model shown with its turbocharged 2.5-litre powerplant delivered 227kW at 6000rpm and 392Nm at 4000rpm. Drive is via a six-speed manual transmission which is more direct and delivers improved feel.
The DCCD allows the driver to select centre differential characteristics according to conditions.
Subaru says the all-new WRX STI affords a wheelbase 25mm longer than the current model (for extra rear-seat space) and you’ll notice the side mirrors are door-mounted and a quarter window has been added. In fact A-pillar has shifted forwards by 200mm and the dashboard and front windows are lower for improved looks and visibility.
Front-end styling is distinctly different – lower and wider – and accentuated by the new ‘hawke-eye’ headlights.
The rear sees that low, wide look continued as well as a diffuser-integrated bumper, thin tail-lights and a large spoiler.
And inside are a number of Subaru WRX STI firsts – not the least of which is a D-shaped sports steering wheel. New seats get the STI logo in the headrests, highlights are in metal and carbon and overall there’s a much better quality look and feel.
Subaru Australia will announce local details shortly.
