‘Morgan’ and ‘all-new’ are pretty foreign as a combination.
British specialist carmaker Morgan have announced that they’re set to introduce an all-new model next year, one that is reportedly the result of “unprecedented” work being conducted at the company. Considering that their cars use wood for chassis and one of their models has only three wheels, we’re not sure just how far they’re raising the bar here.
“[The new model] is the culmination of several years of unprecedented development in design & engineering for Morgan. This has produced the most advanced development program in Morgan’s history, the results of which we cannot wait to share with our customers worldwide.” — Graham Chapman, Director (Technology), Morgan
Known internally as the ‘Wide Body,’ the new car is set to use an all-new bonded-aluminium base, or so reports Autocar. It’ll also seek motivation from “a powertrain never before installed in a Morgan,” so it might be coal-powered.
2018 is the 5th decade Morgan’s employed V8 engines to its cars, and it’ll be its last. The BMW N62 V8-powered Morgan Aero 8 and Plus 8 will cease production very soon, with the last examples of the models to be kept for Morgan’s heritage fleet. Downsized, forced induction motors will be called upon in the future as to ensure emissions compliance and the like – this will likely influence the choice of engine for the new car.
It’s also said the the new chassis will be twice as stiff as the last aluminium Morgan, which they say “will result in the most dynamically-capable production Morgan ever.” That said, Morgan’s ‘old world charm’ that comes from their adherence to ‘doing it the way they used to’ may have resulted in some interesting enthusiast cars, but they’ve hardly been on the leading edge of dynamics and agility. It’s interesting what this ‘superlative Morgan’ will be like in reality. And also how many wheels it has.
