In news which enrage those at Mercedes-Benz’ AMG division and their opposition at BMW ‘M’, a standard production version all-new Range Rover Sport has completed the grueling Pikes Peak hillclimb course in Colorado, USA in 12 minutes 35.61 seconds – breaking the long-held production car record and establishing a new SUV benchmark.
The ‘Rangie’ with its 5.0-litre supercharged V8 engine was standard except for race regulation roll bars and safety harnesses.
Pikes Peak veteran Paul Dallenbach was at the wheel for the 19.87kms course with 156 corners which climbs to 4300-metres. His time in the standard Range Rover Sport of 12 minutes 35.61 seconds represents an average speed of 95.23km/h.
In further bad news for those German rivals, Range Rover has more global events planned to promote the all-new Sport variant which arrives ‘Downunder’ later this year.
