Mercedes-Benz chose the Detroit Show to unveil the all-new fifth-generation E-Class lineup.
As was evident in the numerous spy shots we’ve seen for the last 12 months, the ‘Benz mid-sizer looks gorgeous with its new looks akin to the C-Class and S-Class.
And while size is up (4923mm overall and a 2939mm wheelbase), weight is down by around 70kgs.
Inside is the expected Mercedes-Benz quality and style - again reflecting the interiors of the C-Class and S-Class.
And there is plenty of technology including world-first steering wheel touchpads to operate various functions on screens which include an 8.4-inch version or two 12.3-inch versions.
And of course autonomous driving technology is starting to arrive and the all-new E-Class can be had with Drive Pilot (autonomous control of acceleration, braking and steering), Active Lane Changing Assist (you indicate you wish to change lanes and the vehicle combines radar and camera to do it for you) as well as Remote Parking Pilot (the car can park and return to the driver without anyone behind the steering wheel).
In Europe the engine lineup includes the E200 petrol (135kW/300Nm), E220d diesel (143kW/400Nm), E350d diesel (190kW/620Nm), E350e plug-in hybrid (petrol and electric motors combine for 205kW/600Nm).
Mercedes-Benz Australia says we should expect the all-new E-Class mid-year with prices starting around $80,000 and will reveal the Australian lineup at that time.
