The Mazda CX-9 is coming to Aussie showrooms in 2016 and will be offered in a choice of grades – four, to be exact – mirroring their other SUVs.

When an all-new version of the range-topping Mazda SUV, the CX-9, arrives on Australian shores later this year, buyers will have the option of choosing between four grades.

They are: the entry-level ‘Sport’, the mid-spec ‘Touring’, higher ‘GT’ grade, and the top of the line ‘Azami’. These grades unifies the incoming CX-9 with the tiers found on the other two Mazda SUVs sold here, the CX-3 and CX-5.

All these grades will be made available with either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive (i-ACTIV AWD), bringing the total of local variants within the CX-9 to eight – the widest variety ever offered for it.

Mazda is keen to highlight the fuel economy figures that the all-new CX-9 is capable of achieving. Running on 91 RON or E10 petrol, they say the front-wheel drive units sip just 8.4-litres/100km on a combined cycle whereas an all-wheel drive CX-9 is claimed to consume just 8.8-litres/100km – an improvement over the previous generation by almost 25 percent.

These gains in fuel economy can be attributed to the engineering advancements in Mazda’s powertrain division as the all-new CX-9 will also debut the automaker’s new 2.5-litre direct-injection turbocharged petrol engine generating 170kW and 420Nm.

That new engine is paired with Mazda’s i-stop and i-ELOOP systems, the latter being a capacitor-based brake energy recovery system which stores the charge to power the vehicles electrical systems, saving fuel even further. Mazda says it will be the most economical in its class.

The all-new CX-9 will also come with the i-ACTIVESENSE suite of safety technologies which includes radar cruise control with proximiity warning, adaptive headlamps, emergency city braking, lane departure warning, and blind spot monitoring.

Inside, the CX-9 will be available with a 12-speaker Bose Centrepoint audio system as well as trim materials like Nappa leather, Rosewood, and brushed aluminium.

Alastair Doak, Mazda Australia’s marketing director, said:

“This is the most comprehensive Mazda CX-9 range ever. “Four grades in both Front and All-Wheel Drive, this brings the Mazda CX-9 range in line with the four distinct grades that we offer on Mazda CX-5 and Mazda CX-3. Both of which have proved to be very appealing to Australian car buyers,”

“When the Brand-New Mazda CX-9 arrives, thanks to the strength of the range and the significantly improved fuel economy figures, there is certainly something for everyone.”
