Kia’s all-new Rio hatchback and sedan will arrive in Australia later this year ahead of a 2012 launch for the three-door models. The newcomer bowed at the Geneva Motor Show.
Rio is an important all-new model for Kia with global sales of small cars exploding.
Slightly larger than the current model, the all-new Kia Rio boasts impressive interior space – more width, head and legroom.
Styling continues Kia’s current standout looks – it’s a complete departure from the existing Rio – with the new ‘corporate’ front end, modern wedge shape and rear three-quarter with some cues from the good-looking Sportage SUV. The proportions are excellent and provide a strong on-road presence.
Same on the inside with nice trim materials and colours and a sophisticated look. There are lots of storage spaces and a 288-litre luggage capacity aided by 60/40 split fold rear seats.
In Europe, Kia will offer the Rio with four engines. The petrol lineup comprises the new turbocharged 1.25-litre ‘Kappa’ engine with 63kW/118Nm or the updated 1.4-litre ‘Gamma’ unit with 80kW/136Nm. Diesel power comes from ewither a 51kW/162Nm 1.1-litre or a 66kW/216Nm 1.4-litre.
Kia says the new Rio delivers fuel consumption as low as 3.2l/100kms.
Transmission choice includes five and six-speed manuals or a four-speed automatic.
Kia Rio rides on the usual MacPherson strut front/torsion beam rear suspension.
The stiffer bodyshell and six airbags should ensure a five-star safety rating.
