All-New In-House Direct Injection Petrol Engine for Hyundai

Further showcasing its broadening engineering credentials, Korean manufacturer Hyundai has revealed its new direct injection petrol powerplant - codenamed Theta II GDI.

Australians will see this engine during the first half of next year when Hyundai launches the stylish new mid-size sedan code-named YF

Created in-house by Hyundai, the all-new four-cylinder 2.4-litre powerplant follows the lead of major European brands in developing petrol engines with direct injection as these have proven to deliver handy performance characteristics but achieve the mandatory low emissions and fuel consumption.

Hyundai says the new engine provides 150kW of power at 6,300 rpm and peak torque of 245Nm at 4,250 rpm. As it will be fitted to the mid-size Hyundai YF, here's a couple of comparable mid-sizers: Toyota's Camry has a 2.4-litre four-cylinder with 117kW/218Nm on tap while the Mazda6 has a 2.5 litre four-cylinder that delivers 125kW/226Nm.

Developed with a budget of $160 million, the new engine will also make its way to other Hyundai models.
