Just not another coupé SUV, please.
BMW might have not yet pulled the covers off its new X7 flagship SUV, but if speculation proves accurate, the company might already have the next horizon in sight. The BMW X8 is set to become a reality, if the company’s recent moves are any indication.
In various jurisdictions across the world, Munich has trademarked the ‘X8’ nameplate, suggesting that they are more than just dreaming of a larger, more expensive sibling to the X7. BMW has made comments in the past intimating that there’s space above the X7 for something like an X8, but what form it will take remains a mystery.
If BMW’s classification of its typical-SUVs with odd numbers (X1, X3, X5, X7) and SUV-coupés with even numbers (X2, X4, X6), the assumption would be made that the X8 will be an uber-luxurious, swoopy-roofed machine that’ll undoubtedly be more dramatic than the X7 in terms of presence. However, considering that BMW Group brand Rolls-Royce has just released the end-all luxury SUV in the form of the Cullinan, BMW could choose to ape them to some degree and create a whole new level of luxury and sophistication with the X8.
Regardless, there’s little doubt that the BMW X8 will share its underpinnings and drivetrains with the X7, which we’ll know more about when it makes its debut at the Frankfurt motor show in September. The X8 should arrive in 2020, about a year after the X7. We hope that the X8 will arrive as an uber-luxury car, perhaps as a posh 4-seater with exceptional rear legroom, and not as a coupé.
