BMW’s fleet of driverless 7-Series limousines to push autonomous driving tech & data to new highs.

At the 2017 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, German luxury automaker BMW cemented its push toward autonomous mobility. Its intentions to develop fully autonomous driving systems have been bolstered by its partnership with Intel, and driverless-tech firm Mobileye.

Working together since July 2016, the three firms have been developing a scaleable autonomous technology package that can be employed on various models, and can even be sold to other car marques. The first deployment of this system will be fitted on 7-Series luxobarges, for real-world testing, somewhere in the second half of this year.

Speaking of the announcement, Klaus Frohlich (a member of BMW’s management board of development) said that “making autonomous driving a reality for our customers is the shared ambition behind our cooperation with Intel and Mobileye. Our partnership has all the skills and talent necessary to overcome the enormous technological challenges ahead, and commercialise self-driving vehicles.”

The first Bavarian motor car to benefit from full-autonomy project will be the BMW iNext, which the firm says will come to market in 2021. Intel’s contribution to the collaboration is pretty obvious, while the third partner in all this may need some explanation. Mobileye is one of the leading light in advanced driving assistance (ADAS) systems, and their software and hardware will be able to process the data collected by the 360-degree cameras, radar sensors, and laser (LIDAR) sensors. Working in parallel with the power provided by Intel, the system will then be able to work out the best way to manage any possible scenario on the open road.
