You still lugging around that Q5?
Despite selling more SUVs than anything else, German marque Audi is doggedly sticking to their not-quite-an-SUV range of jacked-up estates, which today gained a new contender in the form of the A6 Allroad. Like the three generations that came before it, the all-new model is once again based on an A6 Avant and then given a healthy dose of machismo and unpainted plastic body cladding.
To be fair, the Allroad does sit considerably higher than the standard car. Thanks to air suspension, standard ride height is a pretty decent 139mm in Auto or Comfort modes – move into maximum height and you’ll gain another 45mm. Drive at speeds north of 120km/h and the ride height lowers 15mm from the normal setting, while Offroad mode will jack up the height by 30mm (and limit speed to 80km/h).
Quattro all-wheel drive is standard of course, but it’s assisted by Allroad-specific features like hill-descent control and tilt-angle assistance. What’s optional are things like the sports rear diff & all-wheel steering, both of which could certainly make the A6 Allroad even less of a compromise on-road.
Standard is the use of a 3.0-litre V6 TDi mill which, for the Allroad, comes in 170kW/500Nm guise, 210kW/620Nm guise, and 257kW/700Nm states of tune. The 8-speed automatic is also standard here, and should be capable of providing impressive fuel economy, particularly when touring.
The interior is offered in black, tan, and beige colour schemes, with standard upholstery being the leather/fabric combination variety. Valcona leather (in beige or brown), sports seats, Alcantara, and additional colour ways are available as cost options of course. And as is typical of Audi, you can keep spending on things like a panoramic glass roof, air quality package, massaging front seats, and heaven knows what else.
The cabin is naturally headlined by the dual-touchscreen infotainment system, which is available as dual 8.6-inch units or dual 10.1-inch units. What isn’t standard, naturally, is Audi’s Virtual Cockpit digital dials, with the 12.3-display that entails remaining a cost option even on the Allroad.
The 2020 Audi A6 Allroad will go on sale in select European markets later this month, with prices starting from €61,500.
