Some models canned, others upgraded.
Mercedes-Benz’s local office has released details on the updated MY2019 E-Class family of cars, with revised specifications across the board. The updated range, spanning the saloon, coupe & cabriolet, enjoy new engines in addition to improved technology, touching on things that are sure to pique the interest of luxury car buyers.
All E-Class models now enjoy an updated Driver Assistance Package Plus suite of, uh, driver assistance systems. Traffic sign recognition has been enhanced and can now work together with the adaptive cruise control, allowing the car to better tailor your cruising speed to prevailing limits. Both systems are now controlled via touch-sensitive buttons on the steering wheel, something we’ve seen trickle down from the S-Class. Further, entry-level E200 & E200d models also benefit from adaptive-LED headlights now, too.
The E350d now gets a new engine under the hood, with the 3.0-litre inline-6 oiler now putting out a healthier 210kW, over the outgoing car’s 190kW. Additionally, the E450 (which succeeds the culled E400) benefits from an improved 3.0-litre V6 engine, which produces 270kW and 500Nm thanks to its twin-turbo setup.
Performance-nuts will likely look to the new AMG in the range, with the E53 4Matic+ (available as a saloon, cabriolet, or coupe) which offers a mild-hybrid petrol-electric powertrain that should (in theory) balance performance and frugality like no other AMG E-Class before it. The biturbo 3.0-litre V6 engine is rated to put out 320kW and 520Nm, but thanks to that integrated starter motor, it can benefit from an additional 16kW and 250Nm over short bursts.
The E53 sends that power to all-four wheels through a performance-focused 4Matic+ system, after having been passed through a 9-speed automatic gearbox. E53s also get things like 20-inch alloys, a panoramic sunroof (on fixed-roof models), Nappa leather, and a Burmester audio system as standard, while the E53 Cabriolet specifically gets neck-level heating and an acoustic soft-top.
For buyers looking at the more sedate end of the range, there’s some good news to share. The E200d and E200 saloons gain the option of a Sport Edition package for a limited time, adding $10,500 to their list prices but bringing with it a whole shedload of kit. You get the AMG-Line aesthetics package for the dosh, as well as 20-inch AMG wheels, “natural” leather upholstery, a Burmester audio system, and metallic paint.
