And it’s huge.

BMW has been prattling on about its upcoming flagship, the X7, for some time. Designed with the sort of people who would feel inadequately serviced by the luxuries of an X5, the X7 is supposed to be able to offer a limousine experience but with better ground clearance. Since confirming the existence of the project, BMW’s shown us photos from inside the factory in the US where it’ll be built, and we’ve been informed that it’ll likely run with a purely-atmospheric engine at launch.

But now, we’ve gotten our first properly clear looks at the X7’s rear, and its interior. And boy, will it live up to the hype.

While BMW’s SUVs have never felt been punishing, the X7 seems to offer a degree of plushness that we haven’t yet seen from the brand’s SUVs. The Range Rover comes immediately to mind and it’s clear that BMW’s used that as a reference point. It really does look like the cabin of a 7-Series limousine, which arguably, is exactly what it’s supposed to look like.

We also got a clear look at the rear end of the X7 for the first time, revealing that it’ll eschew the more athletic looks and proportions that BMW’s X-cars have enjoyed in recent years for a more boxy, upright appearance that is undoubtedly to maximise road presence and cabin space.

While it may look big enough to carry three rows, it might be most commonly ordered as a 5- or even a 4-seater model: While a three-row 6- or 7-seater configuration might be available, the X7’s luxury positioning means that its customers may prefer to maximise legroom by opting for a 2-row configuration instead. This is something we’ve already seen with the Range Rover, Volvo XC90 Excellence and Bentley Bentayga. The Rolls-Royce Cullinan didn’t even bother offering a third row.

The BMW X7 has been slated for a H2 2018 debut for some time now, so it’s only a matter of when at this point. We’ll bring you updates on the 2019 BMW X7 as they drop, so be sure to stay tuned to CarShowroom.
