Look at the size of that exhaust!

2018 Renault Megane RS Shows Off Its Rump

Ahead of its planned debut later this year, Renault’s hotly-anticipated Megane hot hatch, the Megane RS, has revealed itself to a prying camera, showing off its gorgeous rear end.

Posted online by the FerD Facebook page, the Megane RS was only captured from the rear, with a dark cloth cover concealing the rest of the car. From the bottom, it’s clear that the Megane RS will gain a unique diffuser element on the lower bumper, split by a centrally-mounted exhaust (which looks more like a tunnel than a tailpipe). There are vents, set upright on either corner of the bumper, emphasising the width of the new performance hatchback. If you squint, you can see the ‘RS’ badging on the right side of the car, as well as variant-specific wheels and tyres.

Renault Teases All-New Megane RS

The Megane RS should only be offered as a 5-door proposition, with the current-generation Megane not offering a three-door option at all. This should put it squarely against other high-performance hatchbacks like the Volkswagen Golf R and the Ford Focus RS, which are both offered as 5-door models. While this sneaky shot only offers a glimpse at the rear, the front has been teased some while back, with a photo from Renault showing off the RS’ retention of the Megane’s large C-shaped LED daytime running lights, as well as the adoption of ‘chequered flag’ fog lights below.

Thus far, there has been no suggestion of what might live under the bonnet, with critics and observers suggesting either an uprated 1.8-litre turbo petrol (from the Alpine 110 coupe), or a 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder (which would be similar to the drivetrains offered by the Megane RS’ competitors). Regardless, expect power and torque figures to be well north of 220kW and 380Nm, as it won’t likely keep up with the competition otherwise.
